Roots of an Alternative Economy: The Petronio Álvarez Festival in The Colombian Pacific

The Petronio Álvarez Festival in Cali, Colombia, establishes itself year after year as a strong-hold of the Afro-diasporic culture of the Colombian Pacific. It is a magical cultural encounter that -through flavors, music, ancestral drinks, and dance- allows us to live an experience of human and spiritual connection that remains in our memory.
The Petronio is also a space that strengthens community organizing. During its events we meet other makers, organizers, and culture bearers. We grow together and build collective pride that has given us the strength to fight against structural and everyday racism. It has become the space for -as Master Gualajo says- “to return and value the roots,” the source and livelihood of who we are and want to be as AfroColombian people.
Between the stands, the conversations and envichadas that heal the spirit, we are taken on a journey through the stories, flavors and movements that have been built in the land, or as we call it here, the territory. The great Colombian Pacific is the cradle of one of the most important Afro-diasporic claims of the region, alegacy of work toward the construction of our own, peaceful and self-determined horizons.
The festival breaks the apparent division between culture and economy. It presents us with the reality that different kinds of economy for the region is possible, and that it has always been happening! The Second Viche Summit led by the Destila Patrimonio collective allowed us to experience the historic journey, a difficult and long road traveled by producers and connoisseurs of the ancestral beverage, el viche. The Summit showed us that there are paths to strengthen the economic development that the Pacific has long been creating in unique ways.
The important growth of the festival invites us to reflect on how our culture mobilizes and transforms, how it creates that basis for peaceful, loving and harmonious spaces, and how it connects with the processes of reclaiming and repairing history. What are the strategies that allow social movements, as well as the teachers, experts, entrepreneurs and musicians that comprise it, to make it an opportunity for creating and expanding shared wealth along the region?
How do we support and advocate for the connections that occur at the festival to make them stronger and to create consistent platforms for the conservation and growth of cultural practices linked to the protection, preservation and organic development of our territory. These questions and reflection points become urgent as we move toward the vision that we want to reach: An Afro-diasporic festival narrated more and more by those who compose and build it. After all, what drives us towards a future of solidarity and equity is identity and culture, two horizons that hold key seeds for an alternative economy based on inclusive development models.
Festival Petronio Álvarez 2019: Un arrullo de raíces y saberes

Año tras año el Festival Petronio Álvarez se ha consolidado como un espacio para el reencuentro Afro-diaspórico. Es un encuentro mágico cultural que a través de los sabores, la música, las bebidas ancestrales y el baile nos permite vivir una experiencia de conexión humana y ancestral que se queda en la memoria espiritual y corporal.
El Petronio, también ha sido un espacio de fortalecimiento organizativo. Allí muchos nos hemos conocido, hemos crecido y construido ese orgullo colectivo que nos ha dado la fuerza para luchar en contra el racismo estructural y cotidiano. Se ha vuelto el espacio para -como decía el maestro Gualajo-, “volver y valorar las raíces”, fuente y sustento de quienes somos y queremos ser.
Entre los stands, las conversaciones y envichadas que sanan el espíritu, recorremos las historias, sabores y movimientos que se han construido en el territorio: ¡el gran Pacífico Colombiano! cuna de una de las reivindicaciones afro más importantes de la región, y de las apuestas y esfuerzos para la construcción de horizontes propios, pacíficos y autodeterminados.
El festival rompe de tajo la aparente división entre cultura y economía. Nos pone de frente a que otra economía para la región es posible, ¡y que siempre ha estado ocurriendo! La Segunda Cumbre del Viche liderada por el colectivo Destila Patrimonio permitió la posibilidad de sentir esta lucha histórica que recuerda el difícil y largo camino recorrido por los productores y sabedores ancestrales, para que hoy ese pueda ser fuente de desarrollo económico propio.
Ante el importante crecimiento del Festival, quisiera invitar a la reflexión acerca de cómo nuestra cultura moviliza y transforma, cómo es que crea esa base para la creación de espacios pacíficos, amorosos y armónicos, y eso cómo se conecta con los procesos de reivindicación y reparación histórica. ¿Cuáles son esas estrategias que le van a permitir al movimiento social, así como a les maestres, sabedores, emprendedores y músicos que lo componen, apropiar cada vez más el Festival y alejar los riesgos de expropiación?
También, cómo apoyar y abogar para que la conexión que ocurre en el Festival, pueda llevarse de forma más permanente, creando plataformas cada vez más consistentes para la conservación y crecimiento de las prácticas culturales ligadas a la protección, defensa y desarrollo orgánico del territorio . Estas preguntas y puntos de reflexión se vuelven urgentes ante la visión a la cual queremos llegar: Un Festival Afro-diaspórico narrado cada vez más por quienes lo componen y lo construyen. Al fin y al cabo, lo que nos impulsa hacia un futuro de solidaridad y equidad, es la identidad y la cultura, dos horizontes que contienen semillas claves para una economía alternativa basada en modelos de desarrollo inclusivos.
