Robert E. Cornegy, Jr.
Robert E. Cornegy, Jr. represents Bedford Stuyvesant and northern Crown Heights.
In the 2014-2017 session, Councilmember Cornegy served as the Chair for the Committee on Small Business; Co-Chair of the Black, Latino and Asian Caucus (BLAC) and on the committees for Civil Service & Labor, Finance, Health, Housing & Buildings, Public Safety and on the Task Force on Affordable Housing Preservation.
Councilmember Cornegy has demonstrated his leadership through his community partnerships, legislative acumen and life-changing initiatives. Early in his career, he served as a legislative policy analyst for the NYC Council.
Councilmember Cornegy has sponsored seven bills passed into law including Avonte’s Law, and a law mandating lactation rooms for nursing and breast-feeding mothers in public buildings throughout the five boroughs.
Councilmember Cornegy attended St. John’s University, playing backup center for their historic 1984-5 Final Four team. He has a degree in Organizational Leadership from the University of Alabama and a Master’s in Organizational Management. After college, he played professional basketball in Israel, Turkey, Spain, France and Colombia. Councilmember Cornegy is a credentialed alcoholism and substance abuse counselor and has also worked as adjunct professor at Brooklyn College.
Council Member Cornegy and his wife of 13 years Michelle have a blended family of six children.
